PUBG’s maps are getting remastered, starting with Erangel

PUBG Corp has confirmed that, starting with Erangel, it is looking to remaster its battle royal maps. Dataminers uncovered evidence on the test servers last week of a new-look version of the map and posted their findings to Reddit . The developers of the game today confirmed that these leaks were part of a process of ongoing redesign.

The announcement states that “we are working on new ways to balance loot and otherwise improve our maps, Erangel being the first.” New compounds are a potential part of these changes, but the map layout will also have some tweaks. The changes are scheduled to begin the testing process in the coming weeks, but for their actual release there is no concrete date.

The datamined images show the addition of several new compounds scattered across the map, but the community has not gone down particularly well, many of whom seem concerned that Erangel might become too similar to the closer-knit maps such as Sanhok and Vikendi. Fortunately, PUBG Corp stepped in to alleviate some of those fears.

It says that “leaked images are usually just a snapshot in time and rarely represent the entire plan or scope of what’s being worked on.” That doesn’t necessarily mean that these changes won’t appear in some form or another, but does at least suggest that what we can see right now is very much a work in progress.

While there was no word about the continuation of this process, the idea that Erangel will be the “first” change map implies that Miramar and Sanhok may also be subject to some tweaks. It is entirely possible that snowy Vikendi will also change, but since it has only recently been released, I would be more surprised if that were the case.
